An in-depth, down-to-earth analysis of the new features in Shopify Spring 2026 Editions. Learn about Agentic Commerce, Sidekick improvements, and the critical Shopify Scripts deadline, explained simply for SMEs.
The Age of Agentic Commerce: Selling Directly Within AI Chats
The way people search for and buy products online is radically changing. We are no longer just talking about users typing keywords into Google, but about people asking ChatGPT or Gemini to find the perfect item for their needs. This revolution is called "agentic commerce," which is the ability for artificial agents to complete an entire purchase journey on behalf of the consumer, directly within the conversation.
How the AI-Optimized Shopify Catalog Works
The basis of this technology is the Shopify Catalog, a data infrastructure that automatically organizes and enriches your store's product listings. Thanks to multimodal artificial intelligence models that process millions of pieces of information daily, your products are formatted so that virtual assistants can read, understand, and recommend them instantly. For eligible stores on standard plans, this feature is active by default, and according to Shopify data, searches guided by this technology convert twice as well as those based on unstructured web data. If you want to delve deeper into my positioning strategies for these new search engines, I recommend reading my guide on how to do it (/blogs/articoli-shopify/seo-shopify-guida).
The Open UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol)
To prevent each virtual assistant from needing a custom integration with your store, Shopify, together with Google, developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard supported by the world's largest tech players, including Microsoft, Meta, and Stripe. UCP acts as a universal interpreter: it allows the AI agent to query your inventory in real time, calculate shipping costs, apply discounts, and even manage return policies directly from the chat interface, ensuring smooth and secure transactions.
Sidekick AI Evolves: Your Operational Right-Hand Man Everywhere
In my one-person studio, I know how precious time is for SME managers. You often find yourself having to be the marketer, administrator, and logistics manager all by yourself. For this reason, the evolution of Sidekick – Shopify's integrated virtual assistant – represents a concrete operational breakthrough to optimize your day.
Deep Integration with Third-Party Apps (Klaviyo, Loop, Smile)
The most significant new feature is that Sidekick is no longer confined to just the standard screens of the control panel. It can now act and retrieve information even within popular third-party applications like Klaviyo, Smile, Loop, and Judge.me. For example, you can ask it to analyze negative review flows on Judge.me and consequently schedule a personalized apology email via Klaviyo, all with a single voice or text command in natural language.
Sidekick on the Go and Voice Management from Apple Watch
Thanks to full integration into the Shopify mobile app and Apple Watch support, you can manage administrative tasks even when away from your desk. Sidekick works in the background while you perform other tasks, allowing you to create customer profile drafts from unorganized voice descriptions or generate test events to verify that Shopify Flow automations are working smoothly.
Checkout and Conversions: A Frictionless Experience on Every Device
Checkout is the most critical moment for any e-commerce business. If the process is slow or confusing, the customer abandons their cart, and you lose a sale you worked hard and invested in. The Spring Edition 2026 introduces substantial changes to eliminate any remaining friction, especially on mobile devices.
The New Mobile-First Layout of the Standard Checkout
The checkout layout has been entirely redesigned to maximize speed and readability on small screens. Delivery options are clearer to scroll through, the payment button is prominently displayed, and automatic data filling has been sped up. Additionally, with the unified customization tool, you can set colors, logos, and graphic fonts in one place and see them instantly applied across checkout, login pages, and the customer portal, strengthening trust in your brand.
Combined Shipping and Pickup (Ship-and-Pickup) in a Single Cart
This was one of the most requested features by small businesses that have both a physical store and an online store. Finally, customers are no longer forced to split their order or complete two separate transactions if they want to receive one product at home and pick up another directly in-store. Everything is managed in a single, unified cart, simplifying the purchasing logic and increasing the average transaction value.
Automated marketing and native communication channels
Finding new customers and retaining existing ones requires constant effort that small businesses often cannot consistently sustain. The new marketing features aim to automate creative flows without you losing control over your budget.
Campaign Autopilot and guardrails to protect SME margins
Campaign Autopilot is an AI-powered tool that independently manages and optimizes your advertising campaigns across various channels, such as ChatGPT, Pinterest, Meta, and email. To prevent the algorithm from needlessly consuming your budget, I tested the new "guardrails" implemented by Shopify: you can set strict limits on customer acquisition cost (CPA) and the minimum margin of products to promote, ensuring that every generated sale remains profitable.
Native WhatsApp channel and centralized consent management
WhatsApp finally becomes a native communication channel within Shopify Messaging. This means you can manage conversations, send promotions, and collect user consent while fully complying with privacy regulations (GDPR), with tracking preferences centralized alongside email and SMS. If you wish to structure an integrated communication strategy, you can take a look at my consultancy services.
Predictive analytics and the critical expiry of Shopify Scripts
To make sound business decisions, you need clear data, but traditional analytics dashboards are often full of incomprehensible graphs. Shopify has redesigned the analytics section to finally make it useful for daily decisions.
Daily Insights and automated graph annotations
The new dashboard doesn't just show you numbers, it tells you what happened. Thanks to automatic annotations and Daily Insights, the system highlights whether a sales spike was due to a newsletter sent the day before, or if a drop in visits is linked to slower page loading times, allowing you to intervene immediately.
June 30, 2026 deadline: migrate to Shopify Functions now
There's a crucial technical detail that isn't new to this edition but that you absolutely must be aware of if you use advanced checkout customizations. Old Shopify Scripts based on the Ruby language will permanently stop working on June 30, 2026. If you have custom discounts or complex shipping rules written with that system, you must migrate them immediately to the new Shopify Functions before your checkout stops working. This is a delicate transition that I often handle for my clients, and I can support you directly with it.
