Migration to Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento or PrestaShop

Migrating to Shopify means transferring and rebuilding data, catalogue, content and URLs while trying to preserve what already has value on the existing site. I personally handle migrations from WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop and other platforms, using Shopify Basic, Grow and Advanced according to the project requirements.

Before moving data I assess what needs to be preserved, what needs to be transformed and what is better not to import. Catalogue and customer records are normally central to the migration; order history and other legacy information are evaluated case by case according to the source platform, operational needs and the available import method.

SEO continuity is managed with an URL map and 301 redirects, but no migration can guarantee that rankings and traffic will remain identical after the switch. The goal is to reduce risk, maintain correct mappings between old and new pages and check the data after publication.

For a custom solution, I always start with my Audit. I first analyse the state of the website or the requirements of the new project; only afterwards do I define the tailored work and its quote.

My 6-point migration protocol

1. Analysis of existing catalog and URLs

Before moving anything I map the real catalogue: products, variants, categories, content and URLs that receive traffic or are indexed. This makes it possible to understand which elements need a precise destination after migration and which can be consolidated.

2. 301 Redirect Map

For each relevant old URL I define the most coherent destination on the new store. I avoid generic redirects to the homepage when an equivalent page exists and flag content that has no direct match so we can decide how to handle it.

3. Transfer of useful data

I import the data that is actually needed on the new store, such as catalogue and customer records, checking formats, variants, images and required fields. Historical orders or other legacy data are included only when the project requires them and the migration method can preserve them reliably.

4. Rebuilding the theme on Shopify

The visual and functional layer is rebuilt using the theme and features that suit the new store instead of automatically copying code from the previous platform. I preserve what is useful to the brand identity and redesign what cannot be transferred cleanly.

5. Checks before the domain switch

Before publication I verify the essential areas of the new store: navigation, catalogue, checkout, payments, shipping, taxes and transactional communications included in the project. The domain switch happens after these checks, not at the beginning.

6. Checks after publication

After the switch I check indexing, crawl errors, redirects and anomalies that appear in the available data. A migration is not considered complete simply because the domain points to the new store: users and search engines need to reach the correct new destinations.

A migration is also an opportunity to simplify the architecture

Moving to Shopify is an opportunity to avoid automatically replicating plugins, code and structures that are no longer useful on the old site. The new architecture is built around the current needs of the business and the features actually available on the selected Shopify plan.

My goal is to deliver a store that is easier to manage and has a clear technical foundation. I do not promise sales results or the total absence of future problems; instead I verify that what is migrated is coherent, testable and maintainable in the new environment.

A concrete example is Music Delivery, a PrestaShop-to-Shopify migration involving more than twelve years of historical data, a professional catalog and custom functionality. See all Shopify Case Studies.

Everything you need to know about migration

How long does a Shopify migration take?

It depends on the size and quality of the source data, the integrations required and what needs to be rebuilt. After the initial analysis I define a time window based on the actual project.

Will I lose my Google ranking?

The risk exists and is one of the reasons I map URLs and redirects before the switch. The goal is to preserve existing signals as much as possible, but nobody can guarantee that rankings and traffic will remain identical after a migration: the result needs to be checked in the data after publication.

Can I continue to sell during the migration?

Normally the new store is built and tested in parallel while the previous one remains operational. The exact approach depends on the source platform and existing integrations, so the switching plan is defined before changing the domain.

Which Shopify plans do you migrate to?

I work on Shopify Basic, Grow and Advanced. The plan is selected according to the requirements, required features and project complexity before defining the architecture and migration scope.
