Custom Liquid on Shopify: When to Use It for Performance and Flexibility

Direct answer: Custom Liquid is not the “only way” to build a premium and fast Shopify store. It is one tool among theme sections, snippets, blocks, metafields, Metaobjects, app extensions and Shopify Functions. In my work I prefer a native Online Store 2.0 architecture and do not use page builders, but performance depends on implementation quality, not the label attached to the tool.

What Custom Liquid actually is

Liquid is Shopify's theme templating language. The Custom Liquid block lets you insert Liquid markup and logic at a configurable point in the theme, while for reusable or more complex components I prefer dedicated sections and snippets.

It is useful for targeted, maintainable changes without adding an app, but it should not become an indiscriminate container for large amounts of CSS, JavaScript and duplicated logic.

Why I do not use page builders as a baseline

My operating choice is to work with Online Store 2.0 and native theme capabilities. That reduces dependencies and gives direct control over HTML, Liquid, CSS and JavaScript. It does not mean every page builder is automatically slow or every Custom Liquid block is automatically fast.

Poorly written scripts, oversized images or inefficient Liquid loops can make a page slower even without a page builder. The correct test is still the result measured on the real store.

When I create a section instead

If a merchant needs to edit text, images, spacing or configuration from the Theme Editor, I create a section with explicit schema and settings. Custom Liquid is better for smaller interventions that do not need a complex editor interface.

The performance rules that matter

Shopify recommends minimizing unnecessary JavaScript, rendering essential content with Liquid and HTML, avoiding deeply nested loops, using responsive images correctly and serving assets through Shopify's CDN. Those choices affect metrics more than whether a section is labelled “custom”.

I do not promise a specific LCP before testing. I measure LCP, INP, CLS and diagnostic indicators to determine whether the cause is Liquid, images, CSS, JavaScript or app code.

Checkout: Liquid does not bypass platform limits

Theme code cannot freely modify checkout. Shopify exposes different official technologies depending on extension point and plan. Some UI extensions in the information, shipping and payment stages are not available on Basic, Shopify and Advanced; other surfaces and technologies have broader availability. Shopify Functions is available on standard plans for many backend use cases, but each individual API must still be checked.

I therefore do not use Custom Liquid as a workaround for B2B or pricing requirements that must be enforced transactionally. Displaying a different frontend price without correctly changing commerce logic would create an inconsistency, not a solution.

When Shopify Functions fit

Functions run backend logic at supported Shopify extension points, including discounts, validations and delivery or payment customizations. They are not a universal replacement for apps, and availability must be checked for the specific API and plan.

When a requirement can be solved with a Function, I consider that route; when it requires data, interfaces or external integrations, developing or using a Shopify app may be more appropriate.

Custom Liquid and GEO

Liquid's server-side rendering makes content available in the initial HTML, which is useful for accessibility and comprehension. I do not use hidden text, keyword stuffing or instructions addressed to crawlers. Content describing the brand, services and products should be visible and consistent for people too.

Likewise, extra files or structured data cannot force an AI assistant to cite a site. My GEO work focuses on controllable signals: crawlability, entities, semantic structure, data and content.

The rule I use in projects

I start from the simplest solution: theme settings when enough, a native section when configurability is needed, Custom Liquid for small interventions, dedicated sections/snippets for reusable components, Metaobjects for structured data, and Functions or apps when the requirement is backend or integration-heavy.
