Ecommerce in Italy in 2026: Costs, Shopify and Technical Architecture

Ecommerce in Italia: architettura Shopify, costi, catalogo e sviluppo tecnico

Direct answer: the cost and complexity of an ecommerce project in Italy in 2026 do not depend only on the platform. A sustainable project needs to consider Shopify subscription, payments, catalog, theme, apps, development, logistics, marketing and the requirements applicable to the business together.

The technical setup should be proportional to the project: starting with more software than needed creates costs and dependencies; starting without a data and process structure makes future growth more expensive.

Which costs should an ecommerce project consider?

There is no universal budget. I analyze:

  • platform plan;
  • domain and any paid theme;
  • payment fees and services;
  • apps that are actually necessary;
  • development, configuration and maintenance;
  • logistics, packaging, shipping and returns for physical products;
  • administrative and tax tools;
  • marketing, content and measurement.

For current Shopify pricing I maintain a separate guide: How much Shopify costs in Italy in 2026. I keep variable rates separate from this architecture guide so they do not become outdated data duplicated across several articles.

Why choose Shopify?

Shopify manages much of the ecommerce infrastructure and provides catalog, checkout, payments, orders, themes, APIs and an app ecosystem. It makes sense when those capabilities match the merchant’s operating model.

My professional scope is Basic, Shopify and Advanced. I choose a plan based on needed features and real costs, not as a symbol of brand size or status.

Catalog architecture

Before design I define products, variants, collections, attributes, metafields and metaobjects. If these data are inconsistent, filters, search, feeds and integrations become fragile even with an excellent-looking theme.

Products

A product page should present accurate and sufficient customer information: features, variants, price, availability, media and relevant conditions. I do not fill descriptions with keywords when that makes them less clear or readable.

Collections

Collections organize navigation and provide context to groups of products. Title, description, filters and internal linking should correspond to a useful intent, not be created only to multiply indexable pages.

Theme and mobile

The theme should be easy to use and maintain. I check hierarchy, navigation, product pages, cart and key interactions on desktop and mobile.

Performance and Core Web Vitals are important technical measures, but I do not convert a speed threshold into an automatic conversion percentage. The relationship with sales depends on the entire journey and audience.

Apps: how many are needed?

The right number is not zero and it is not “one for every problem”. For each feature I check:

  1. whether Shopify already provides it natively;
  2. whether the theme can handle it without creating technical debt;
  3. whether an existing app is the more appropriate and sustainable choice;
  4. whether the requirement is specific enough to justify custom Shopify app development.

The decision is based on function, cost, data, dependencies and maintenance.

Payments

Available methods, fees and terms vary by market and provider. The setup should be checked in the admin and against current documentation, with test orders before go-live.

Shipping and logistics

Shipping profiles, rates, times and carriers should reflect what the merchant can actually offer. I do not set standard times copied from other ecommerce sites: I use the project’s destinations, products and logistics contracts.

Privacy, cookies and Italian requirements

An ecommerce website may have requirements involving privacy, cookies, consumer information, accessibility, taxation and contractual documentation. Applicability depends on the business and merchant.

The technical work consists of implementing the agreed configurations and tools correctly. Specific legal or tax assessment remains with the competent professional: I do not sell a Shopify configuration as a legal certification.

Technical SEO

The foundation includes indexation, sitemap, canonical, titles, meta descriptions, internal linking, images and structured data. Content should match page intent and keep brand, products and services consistent.

No single change can guarantee a Google position. The goal is to remove technical problems and build pages that can be interpreted correctly.

GEO and AI Search

I apply the same principle to generative systems: clear data, consistent entities, up-to-date catalog, correct structured data and accessible content. I do not use hidden text or instructions intended to force ChatGPT, Gemini or other systems to cite the site.

Tracking and decisions

Before optimizing a funnel, you need to know whether the data are reliable. I check available configurations and tools for reading traffic, sales and important events, separating measurement problems from actual store problems.

When is custom development needed?

Custom development makes sense when a feature is not adequately covered by Shopify or an available app, or when external systems need to be integrated with specific logic.

In these cases I can work on:

  • Liquid sections and components;
  • API integrations;
  • webhooks and automation;
  • embedded Shopify apps;
  • backend and data synchronization.
