GDPR and Cookies on Shopify in Italy: Technical Checklist 2026

Direct answer: a Shopify configuration cannot be declared “GDPR compliant” simply because a cookie banner or an app is present. You need to verify which data are processed, which tools are loaded and which legal bases and notices apply to the merchant.
What I check technically
- cookies and scripts loaded before and after consent;
- integration of the consent-management platform;
- pixels and analytics tools;
- forms and fields that collect personal data;
- links to privacy and cookie policies;
- third-party applications that introduce tracking.
Consent Mode and tracking
The technical setup must reflect the merchant’s choices and the guidance of the competent adviser. I verify that signals are transmitted as configured, but I do not present a technical configuration as a legal certification.
Checkboxes
I do not add “mandatory” checkboxes indiscriminately. The need for separate consent depends on the purpose of the processing and the actual flow.
App or custom development
When a consent-management platform covers the requirement well, I integrate it. If a specific function is needed, I can work on the theme or a dedicated integration while keeping application logic separate from the legal assessment.
I am Francesco Guiducci, a freelance Shopify expert and Shopify app developer. My work covers implementation, testing and technical consistency; the regulatory assessment for each merchant remains with the competent professional.
