Shopify Payment Methods in Italy: Setup and Checks for 2026

Direct answer: payment setup for a Shopify store in Italy should be based on the merchant’s country, served markets, currencies and eligibility for each payment method. Offering more options can reduce some friction, but it does not guarantee a higher conversion rate: checkout must be configured and tested on the actual store.
Shopify Payments in Italy
According to Shopify’s current documentation, Shopify Payments is available in Italy. When enabled, supported card payments become available and processing rates depend on the Shopify plan and the conditions applicable to the account.
I work with stores on Basic, Shopify and Advanced and always check the actual settings under Settings → Payments before proposing changes.
Cards and accelerated checkouts
For Shopify Payments in Italy, official documentation lists support for networks such as American Express, Maestro, Mastercard, UnionPay and Visa. Available accelerated checkouts include Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay.
Availability and behavior should still be checked on the customer’s device, browser and account: simply enabling a wallet is not a sales guarantee.
Local payment methods
Shopify lets merchants enable local payment methods that are shown based on customer location. As of September 3, 2026, Italian documentation lists options including Bancontact, iDEAL | Wero, BLIK, Klarna, MB WAY, MobilePay and TWINT, with availability varying by country and specific requirements.
I do not enable every possible method by default: I select those that match the markets actually served and verify currency, eligibility and current conditions.
PayPal
Shopify supports PayPal Express Checkout in the relevant contexts. To access all available features, the PayPal account associated with the store must be configured correctly. Refunds, captures and checkout behavior should be tested after activation.
Buy Now, Pay Later
Installment services such as Klarna may be available through Shopify Payments or other integrations depending on country and eligibility. I do not automatically attribute a higher average order value to an installment method: the commercial effect depends on catalog, price, audience and provider terms.
Fees and costs
I do not publish fixed percentages because rates and conditions can change. For Shopify Payments, the correct source is the documentation and pricing information applicable to the account; third-party providers’ current terms should also be checked.
How I check a payment setup
- I verify country, currency and active markets;
- I check Shopify Payments and additional configured methods;
- I verify any eligibility requirements;
- I check what actually appears at checkout for representative markets;
- I run test transactions when the context allows it;
- I verify refunds, notifications and order reconciliation;
- I check mobile and desktop without modifying checkout areas that are unavailable on the plan being used.
Checkout and theme are different layers
I do not try to solve in the theme a function that belongs to the payment system or checkout. On Online Store 2.0 I can work on pre-checkout communication and storefront components; checkout possibilities instead depend on the technologies and extensions Shopify makes available in the merchant’s context.
My work
I’m Francesco Guiducci, a freelance Shopify expert and Shopify app developer. I configure and verify payment flows on Basic, Shopify and Advanced, declaring any platform or provider limitations before implementation.
