Dropshipping on Shopify in 2026: A Practical Guide Without Shortcuts

Come Iniziare un Negozio Shopify in Dropshipping – Guida Passo Passo - IFG eCommerce® | Shopify Partner

Direct answer: Shopify can be used for a dropshipping project, but the platform does not automatically solve supplier quality, margins, delivery times, returns or compliance. The important work happens before launch: choose a verifiable supply chain, build a coherent catalog and test the order-shipping-support flow on the real case.

How dropshipping works on Shopify

The customer buys from your Shopify store; the order is then sent to the supplier through the integration you choose. The supplier prepares and ships the product, while the merchant remains responsible for the commercial relationship with the customer under the rules applicable to the market served.

Automation can reduce manual work, but it does not remove the need to monitor stock, prices, tracking and exceptions.

1. Choose the supplier before the theme

Before designing the store I verify at least:

  • actual product quality;
  • shipping warehouse;
  • processing times and available shipping lines;
  • tracking and exception management;
  • policy for defective products, returns and refunds;
  • SKU, stock and price synchronization;
  • documentation and requirements applicable to the product.

I do not publish delivery times copied from a supplier’s marketing page without checking the actual route and product. See also: how to choose a dropshipping supplier.

2. Calculate margin with all costs

Pricing cannot be based only on product cost and selling price. Shipping, payment fees, returns, refunds, applicable taxes, support, apps and customer acquisition all affect the calculation. I do not use a universal multiplier: a lightweight product shipped from an EU warehouse has a different cost structure from a bulky extra-EU product or one subject to specific requirements.

3. Logistics and customs

Times and costs vary by origin, destination, carrier, shipment value and import method. VAT, IOSS and customs treatment must be checked against the actual setup and with the competent professional for tax treatment.

I cover the technical checks in Dropshipping on Shopify in Italy: logistics, delivery and EU customs.

4. Shopify catalog

Products and variants need consistent identifiers. I avoid automatically importing descriptions, images and specifications without review: beyond content quality, accuracy, usage rights and correspondence between what is shown and what the customer receives must be checked.

5. Theme and performance

For the storefront I work with Online Store 2.0 without a page builder. I first use native Shopify and theme features and add apps only when they are genuinely needed. App count alone does not measure performance: I inspect the resources actually loaded and test desktop and mobile.

6. Orders, stock and automation

An automated flow is reliable only after real tests. I check what happens when a variant is out of stock, the supplier price changes, an address is rejected, tracking is delayed or the supplier cannot fulfill the order.

If you use CJ Dropshipping, see my guide to CJ Dropshipping and Shopify integration.

7. Returns and right of withdrawal

Dropshipping does not remove the merchant’s obligations toward consumers. Policies, withdrawal flows and return management must reflect applicable rules and the supplier’s actual operational capability. I avoid wording such as “guaranteed return” or “complete compliance” unless supported by verified conditions.

8. SEO and GEO

For organic visibility I work on visible content, consistent product data, internal linking, relevant structured data and verifiable information. I do not use hidden content or crawler instructions and I do not promise that an AI system will cite or recommend the store.

When it makes sense to launch

Launching makes sense when product and supply chain have been tested, costs are sustainable and you know how to handle a problematic order. The theme comes later: a polished frontend cannot compensate for an unreliable supplier or unverified logistics.
