Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce in 2026: Which One to Choose

Visualizzazione astratta delle infrastrutture Shopify WooCommerce e Magento secondo lo Standard IFG eCommerce

Direct answer: there is no platform that is best in every situation. For most SMEs that want a managed ecommerce platform without directly operating hosting and the server stack, Shopify is my recommendation. WooCommerce makes sense when WordPress is already central and the team wants direct control of hosting, database and code. Adobe Commerce fits organizations that accept greater infrastructure complexity and have the engineering resources to manage it. The decision should be based on requirements and operating cost, not arbitrary revenue thresholds.

The main difference is the operating model

Shopify is SaaS: platform infrastructure, platform updates, CDN and much of the application security layer are managed by Shopify. The merchant primarily works on catalog, configuration, theme, apps and integrations.

WooCommerce is an ecommerce extension for WordPress. It gives direct control over the stack, while hosting, updates, extension compatibility, caching, database and security become part of the merchant's or provider's operating scope.

Adobe Commerce can run in cloud or on-premise configurations and requires an environment aligned with supported dependencies and services. Adobe publishes version-specific system requirements and distinguishes between Cloud and on-premise deployments.

Shopify: when I recommend it

I recommend Shopify when the business wants to focus on catalog, sales and integrations without turning infrastructure management into a separate project. My work is on Basic, Shopify and Advanced plans and Online Store 2.0, without page builders as a baseline.

Shopify provides less server control than a self-hosted platform but offers official theme tooling, Admin API, Storefront API, Shopify Functions and apps. Hydrogen is available for specialized storefront requirements, but I do not introduce headless if an OS 2.0 theme satisfies the requirement with less complexity.

WooCommerce: freedom and responsibility

WooCommerce can be a strong choice when WordPress is already the center of the project and the team wants control over database, plugins, hosting and checkout. High-Performance Order Storage has been stable since WooCommerce 8.2 and is enabled by default on new installations, using dedicated order tables instead of the legacy posts/postmeta model.

That flexibility comes with operational responsibility. Performance and stability also depend on hosting, caching, theme, plugins and extension compatibility. A well-designed WooCommerce store can perform well; a neglected configuration can become expensive to maintain.

Adobe Commerce: more infrastructure complexity and control

Adobe Commerce is appropriate where an organization wants a more elaborate platform and can support its development, deployment and maintenance lifecycle. Adobe documents requirements for databases, search, caching, queues and other services, with differences between Cloud and on-premise.

I do not associate Adobe Commerce with a fixed revenue threshold. The relevant question is whether the technical and organizational requirements justify the additional complexity.

Performance: do not choose from a demo

On all three platforms, real performance depends on implementation. Shopify provides a managed infrastructure baseline; WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce provide more stack control. Images, JavaScript, apps or extensions, caching, templates and code quality still affect the result.

I compare platforms using the same evidence: real Core Web Vitals, rendering behavior, asset weight, mobile stability and the operational cost of maintaining performance.

Checkout and customization

WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce allow more direct access to checkout code. Shopify uses a platform-controlled extension model, and availability of individual extension points depends on plan and technology. Saying Shopify checkout is simply “locked” is therefore too broad; the exact requirement has to be checked.

Data, integrations and B2B

For ERP, CRM, PIM and automation I look at API quality, available events and which system must remain source of truth. Shopify exposes Admin GraphQL API, webhooks and B2B resources; WooCommerce provides APIs within the WordPress ecosystem; Adobe Commerce has its own APIs and services.

The right platform is the one that covers the required data model and processes with the fewest fragile workarounds.

SEO and generative search

SEO and GEO do not make one platform automatically superior. Crawlability, canonical URLs, performance, content, linking, entities and structured data can be implemented well or poorly on any stack. No proprietary protocol can force an AI model to choose an ecommerce store.

My recommendation

For an SME without a requirement incompatible with Shopify, I choose Shopify because it reduces the infrastructure surface the business needs to maintain. If the project truly requires full server-side control or is deeply tied to WordPress or an Adobe architecture, migration should not be done just for fashion.

For WooCommerce, see the official HPOS documentation. For Adobe Commerce, the system requirements remain a useful technical reference.

If you are moving to Shopify, I also handle migration and redirect mapping.
