Shopify Academy: courses, Verified Skills and badges in 2026

Shopify Academy is Shopify’s official learning hub for merchants and professionals in the Partner ecosystem. It includes free and paid content. The key distinction is that free courses do not award a completion certificate, while Verified Skills badges are earned by passing specific paid assessments.
For merchants, a Verified Skill is useful evidence about a defined area of knowledge, but it should be considered alongside relevant project work, current reviews and the professional’s ability to explain the proposed approach.
What Shopify Academy offers
Shopify lists learning paths covering topics such as building and optimizing online stores, Shopify POS, B2B, headless commerce, and custom app and theme development. At the time of this review, Academy is primarily available in English, with selected content also available in Japanese.
Free courses versus Verified Skills
Free Academy courses are for learning and do not grant badges or certificates of completion. Verified Skills are different: they require a paid assessment with a minimum passing score shown on the assessment page. Passing earns a verified skill badge.
So completing an Academy course and holding a Shopify Verified Skill are not equivalent claims. The second includes a passed assessment and a specific credential.
How the badges work
Verified Skills badges are issued through Credly. Shopify states that they are valid for two years, after which the relevant assessment must be passed again to keep the credential current. For a badge to count toward a Partner organization, the email address used for Shopify Academy must be connected to that organization.
Verified Skills and the Partner Program
Shopify includes Verified Skills among the credential requirements that can contribute to Partner Program tier progression, together with other performance criteria. One badge does not determine a Partner tier, and current status should be checked against Shopify’s up-to-date Partner documentation.
What they mean in the Partner Directory
Shopify says the Partner Directory’s default ranking uses multiple factors, including trust and performance, quality of work and user location, and that it promotes active participation, referrals, collaborations and Shopify certifications. Shopify does not publish a numeric weight for each factor, so a specific badge cannot be treated as a guarantee of a particular Directory position.
How merchants should interpret a badge
When choosing a Shopify professional, check whether the credential matches the actual project. A POS credential, for example, is not automatically evidence of theme-development or app-development expertise. Also check how recent the credential is, the evidence from comparable work, and whether the proposed solution fits the real Shopify plan and scope.
For projects on Basic, Grow or Advanced, those plans should remain the baseline rather than treating Shopify Plus as the default reference.
Is Academy useful without a badge?
Yes. Academy can still be useful for learning a feature, training an internal team or studying a new area. For professional work, it should sit alongside the Help Center, Shopify.dev documentation, the changelog, Editions and testing on the real platform because Shopify changes continuously.
The useful distinction
Shopify Academy teaches, Verified Skills assess specific capabilities, and real project delivery shows how those capabilities are applied. A badge is useful evidence, not a guarantee of project results.
